This holiday season, Wild Rivers Waterpark in Irvine will once again host Dream Glow Festival, bringing an even larger display of handcrafted Chinese lanterns to guests. Scheduled from November 5 through December 30, the event celebrates a centuries-old artistic tradition, showcasing intricate lantern creations by skilled artisans while exploring the rich history, cultural heritage, and enduring evolution of one of China’s most iconic forms of folk art.
The exhibition features thousands of handcrafted illuminated lanterns created by artisans from China, many of whom specialize in traditional lantern construction and large-scale light installations. Their work draws upon the lantern-making traditions of Zigong, a city in Sichuan Province internationally recognized for its history of lantern festivals and the preservation of intricate lantern craftsmanship. Combining traditional techniques with contemporary engineering, the artisans transform silk, fabric, steel frameworks, and thousands of LED lights into monumental sculptures depicting mythology, nature, folklore, and seasonal imagery.
Chinese lanterns have long held symbolic meaning in festivals and community celebrations, representing themes of reunion, prosperity, hope, and the welcoming of good fortune. Historically associated with the Lantern Festival marking the conclusion of Lunar New Year celebrations, the art form has developed over centuries into both a cultural tradition and a sophisticated artistic practice, requiring expertise in design, metalworking, painting, sculpting, lighting, and assembly.
In addition to the lantern exhibition, Dream Glow Festival presents a series of traditional performances that provide broader cultural context for visitors. Scheduled performances include Bianlian (Sichuan face-changing), an iconic performance art rooted in Sichuan opera, along with Yangge folk dance and other traditional presentations that reflect regional customs and performing arts traditions.
Educational programming forms an important part of this year’s festival. Visitors will have the opportunity to participate in lantern-making workshops led by experienced craftspeople, where demonstrations introduce the materials, construction methods, and artistic techniques used to create traditional Chinese lanterns. These sessions offer insight into the collaborative process behind large-scale lantern production while highlighting the skills passed down through generations of artisans.
By bringing together traditional craftsmanship, performing arts, and hands-on learning experiences, Dream Glow Festival serves as a platform for cultural exchange, offering Southern California audiences the opportunity to engage with Chinese artistic traditions beyond exhibition alone.
