Party with a Purpose: Making Your Kids’ Celebration Eco-Friendly

By Macaroni KID Irvine with Sustainable Parties April 20, 2026

Why celebrate Earth Day for just one day when you can celebrate all month long? 🌱 Earth Month is the perfect time to make small, meaningful changes—starting with the way we celebrate our kids’ parties.

That’s exactly what inspired Dayna López-Price, founder of Sustainable Parties. After noticing the overwhelming amount of waste left behind at parties—from single-use plates to decorations—she began rethinking what it really means to celebrate. What once seemed like “easy cleanup” turned into a bigger realization: those conveniences often come at a cost to our environment.

Now, she’s on a mission to help families create fun, memorable parties that are also eco-friendly. And this Earth Month, it’s easier than you think to start making simple swaps that add up to a big impact.

How you got started with Sustainable Parties?

I got started with Sustainable Parties after becoming more conscious of the damage disposable party supplies can do. I noticed the large amounts of trash left behind at parties I attended. Before that, I just thought disposables were easy—quick to clean up and throw away.

What makes a party “sustainable”?

A sustainable party is one that minimizes waste and environmental impact. This can be as simple as using reusable items, sending digital invitations, serving locally sourced food, and choosing eco-friendly decorations.

Simple ways parents can make a party more eco-friendly.

Here are 5 simple swaps that can make a big difference:

1) Use reusable tableware
Swap paper plates, plastic cups, and disposable cutlery for real plates, glasses, and silverware. Local networks like the Party Kit Network connect families with people who provide reusable kits for parties, making it easy to cut down on single-use waste.

2) Send digital invitations
Platforms like Eventbrite, Evite, or Punchbowl make it easy to send invitations electronically, which reduces paper waste.

3) Choose eco-friendly supplies
Look for decorations, party favors, and services that are designed to be reused or recycled. Even small changes, like reusable banners or fabric décor, can reduce a lot of waste.

4) Skip helium balloons
Instead of balloons, try creative decorations like bunting, banners, or themed table displays that you can use again.

5) Focus on thoughtful experiences
Sometimes, the best memories come from shared experiences rather than disposable items—crafts, games, or community activities make celebrations meaningful and eco-friendly.

Fun ideas for celebrating Earth Day

Since it’s Earth Month, you can celebrate the planet all month long with your family:

  1. Attend a local Earth Day event
  2. Volunteer at a community cleanup
  3. Host a book swap or craft swap in your neighborhood
  4. Borrow and read Earth Day-themed books from your local library
  5. Share your eco-friendly celebrations online to inspire others

As a social entrepreneur, my advice is simple:

  • Restaurants: Find ways to reduce food waste, like donating unsold food through local programs.
  • Other businesses: Partner with local suppliers to cut down on transportation emissions.

Even small changes can make a big impact, and it all starts with thinking about sustainability in everyday decisions.
