Zoomars Petting Zoo Review

By Macaroni Kid Irvine July 15, 2016
My family and friends took our little Tots to Zoomars Petting Zoo last week and had a blast! If you are not familiar with Zoomars Petting Zoo, it is located in the beautiful Los Rios historic district in San Juan Capistrano and is home to llamas, pigs, ponies, horses, goats, sheep, chickens, emus, alpacas, cows, rabbits and guinea pigs. Zoomars offers camps and space for event rentals in addition to their petting zoo that is open every day.

Upon arriving to Zoomars Petting Zoo, we were greeted by friendly and enthusiastic staff at the welcome counter where fresh feed baskets for the animals were available for purchase. Our baskets included apples, carrots, broccoli, and greens. There were also juicy slices of watermelon, cups of pellets, and apple halves available.

Our first stop was to the guinea pig pen where both kids and adults can enter to feed and mingle with the animals. There were guinea pigs everywhere and a few special chickens that were very friendly allowing the kids to gently pet them. The staff was also on hand to provide information about the animals and also assisted in bringing guinea pigs and chickens to you for feeding and petting. This was a great experience for our little ones especially since all the animals were very tame and easy for shy kids to interact with. I know my little Olivia was a bit timid at first, but being around these animals gave her confidence and she was able to feed and pet them. It was a great first time experience and she loved it. There was also ample seating all around the pen so you could sit down and really let your child take their time getting familiar with the animals.

We then proceeded to visit the pen of furry bunnies that come in all sizes from very small to OMG is that a rabbit?!? We went around and met and fed all the goats, pigs, sheep, emus, alpacas, and llamas. Your child can also take a fun guided pony or horse ride. Visiting the ponies and horse for us was interesting. Of the 3 Tots, 1 loved it, 1 cried a little, and 1 (mine) just would not have anything to do with them...screaming and kicking were involved.

I think the most fun our kids had was in the corn pit. There is literally a large pit full of dried corn kernels that you can jump into and sit, lay, make corn angels, whatever you want to explore the corn. There's also a great train that kids with or without their parents depending on age. The track is short and goes round and round and we were all pleasantly surprised that the ride was for a good length of time. All the kids and moms had a blast on the train. There's also a mining station where kids can mine for gold and gems. At the end of the activity a Zoomars staff member will present your child with their own bag of precious stones they can take home. Zoomars also has a great large playground at the far end of the petting zoo. It's very clean and well kept.

All in all, we loved Zoomars Petting Zoo. It's a great place for kids to explore with their hands and their minds and learn more about animals and caring for them. It's a great place for parents as well and gave us the opportunity to share something fun and educational with our kiddos. There's ample seating everywhere and because cleanliness is important to Zooomars for both the animals and kid's health, there are wash stations available and those with small babies, there's a diaper changing station.
