2023 VidCon Anaheim, CA: What is VidCon?

Would you let your child be a social media influencer?

By Macaroni Kid Irvine July 12, 2023

We got a chance to go to VidCon 2023 in Anaheim this year. What is VidCon? VidCon is a convention for fans, creators, and people in the industry who are online influencers on social media.
Arriving at VidCon, there were so many vendor booths from YouTube, CapCut, Squishmallows, Nintendo and so much more! The Expo floor was filled with things to see, learn, play and have fun.

Why should you go to VidCon?

My 12 year old wanted to go to VidCon this year to meet some of his favorite online creators. That basically sums up why many people go to VidCon.
But it's not only for the fans, creators go to network with other creators and learn about the latest trends.
There's a whole lineup of panel discussions from creators and online influencers who talk about the industry trends and brands, how some of them got started, and tips on how to optimize your online presence.

Being a fan of these creators one thing, but I do wonder, would you let your child be an influencer?

So I'm asking the question, what are the pros and cons of having your child on social media?

Pros if your child wants to be a social media influencer:

• using their platform to promote positive messages and values

• connecting with other kids who share similar interest

• earn money and gaining exposure and opportunities

The Cons of having your child be a social media influencer:

• Cyberbullying and online predators

• missing out on childhood experiences

• developing unrealistic expectations

After attending a few panels where some of the influencers were speaking on this subject, I found a few interesting facts.

  • From the speakers that I attended, some of their parents didn't really know what their kids were doing. But once they learned about what they do, they were very supportive of them.
  • I also like the fact that some of their niches are actually positive and brings awareness to some of the current issues.

Ultimately, the decision of whether or not to allow your child to become a social media influencer is a personal one. There is no right or wrong answer, and the best decision for your child will depend on their individual circumstances.

If you are considering allowing your child to become a social media influencer, here are some things to keep in mind:

  • Talk to your child about the risks and benefits of being an influencer. Make sure they understand the potential consequences of sharing their personal life online.
  • Set clear boundaries and expectations. Talk to your child about what content they are allowed to share and how much time they can spend on social media.
  • Monitor your child's social media activity. Keep an eye on what your child is posting and who they are interacting with.
  • Help your child develop a positive self-image. Make sure your child knows that their worth is not based on their number of followers or likes.
